New Zealand's Prime Ministers

Michael Bassett

David Ling, 2016
An interesting overview of NZ PM's from Seddon to Key. The chapter on Seddon has some good information on his attitude towards and role in the Women's Suffrage debate. Massey's chapter has some snippets on the 1912 Wahi miners strike and NZs entry into WW1. The chapters on Kirk, Muldoon & Lange have some interesting insights into the anti-nuclear debate and the issue surrounding sporting contacts with South Africa. Will prove useful for the Protest & Dissent topic for Yrs 12 & 13.

A Short History of the New Zealand Wars

Gordon McLauchlan

Bateman, 2017
A really good general summary of all of the NZ Wars. Does not go into great depth but will be useful as a starting point up to Yr.12. Would also be a useful resource for a cross-curricular programme at Yr. 11 or for Yrs. 9-10.

The "state of play" concerning New Zealand's transition to innovative learning environments: Preliminary results from phase one of the ILETC project
Bradbeer, Mahat, Byers, Cleveland, Kvan, Imms
University of Melbourne 2017
Hard to know exactly what to make of this. The authors admit that this is a preliminary report. It looks to me that it is an attempt to justify the move into ILEs. There is they admit no hard evidence that the move is as yet successful. They make the assumption that the move will eventually be more beneficial to students than the "factory model". Who knows 2/3 of the teachers and schools involved are single cell.

“Kotahi Te Kohao o Te Ngira”: Decolonial Solidarities and the Healing of Historical Trauma in Aotearoa New Zealand

Dr Nēpia Mahuika

Transcript of Keynote address from NTHTA Conference 18/4/2018
Argues that NZ history teaching needs to widen its scope and move away from the standard version of our history and incorporate more of the Maori view to balance out the narrative. He argued that as a consequence of our colonial past Maori suffer from an intergenerational disadvantage in economic and social terms. In effect, NZ history needs to be decolonised.

Pacific History

Brent Coutts & Nicholas Fitness

Nelson, 2018
A new textbook covering a wide range of Pacific history. The presentation is excellent with the emphasis on key historic ideas, historiography and primary sources. The chapter on the American annexation of Hawaii could be used as a counterpoint to our colonial experience. The chapters on the arrival and impact or Christianity on Tonga and the civil wars and Mau movement in Samoa would be an excellent resource for a research inquiry at Yr.12 or 13. As would the chapter on Pasifika in NZ. It covers in depth the Dawn Raids and the Polynesian Panthers. Could be useful as a way of engaging and encouraging Pasifika students to look into their own stories.

The New Zealand Wars

Phillipa Werry

New Holland, 2018
A very accessible account of the NZ Wars starting with Wairau. does not go into great depth but would be a useful starter for research at Yr. 12. It would be an excellent resource for a cross-curricular module at Yrs. 9 &10 or as part of a Yr. 11 cross curricula programme.

Eleanor Cummins
Popular Science 21/6/18
An interesting article dealing with the addictive aspects of various digital platforms. As some platforms move to limit or highlight the time users are active the author points out these are the same platforms that designed addictive User Experience (UX) into their programmes to start with. Most online platforms are UX designed to ensure the user spends maximum time there. The wait for Twitter to load, push notifications, have to reload timelines etc. UX design is meant to capture users and maximise time on a device. This is useful as the conversation surrounding student dependency on their phones is starting to take off. One surprising stat from the article ".... it appears that on average we touch, swipe, or tap our phones more than 2,000 times a day, according to a study from consumer research company Discount.

Dancing with the King: The Rise and Fall of the King Country 18664-1885

Michael Belgrave
Auckland University Press 2017

An interesting account of the diplomatic relations between the King Movement and the Government and the advent of the King Country. Charts the changing relationship between both sides eventually leading to the demise of the King Countrys isolation/independence. Belgrave likens their ongoing interactions as a dance between initially two equal partners. A great resource for Yr. 13 & Kingitanga. Works well as a companion piece to the "Great War for New Zealand.

Innovative Teaching Practice
Paul McGuinness
Sabbatical Report 2016
 Updated 2018
A useful guide to some of the pedagogy behind teaching practices to best make use of ILE's. This new approach requires a new way of teaching. Difficult to progress in the day to day reality of a full time teaching role.

Introduction to VPN-based filter avoidance
Family Zone 2018
Students using VPN to bypass school filters has been an ongoing issue. This report is useful in helping identify what to look out for as well as explaining the way various VPN's work. They are trying to sell a product so conclusions are not all that great.

Digital Technology Safe and responsible use in schools
Minstry of Education/ Netsafe 2015
A very good overview of some of the issues surrounding the safe use of Digital Technology in school. Reassuring to see that we are on the right track in many areas. We might possibly need to add a section into the User Agreement around recording staff or students without express permission. Another area we might improve on is involving the students more in discussions around what is an acceptable use of the school network.

Huia Histories of the Maori
Edited by Danny Keenan
Huia Press 2012
A history of New Zealand written from a Maori perspective. The contributors are all Maori academics. It will be a useful companion to Rangnui Walkers "Struggle Without End". A very good chapter on the Musket Wars will be useful especially as it highlights dislocation and how it now plays a part in inter-iwi disputes before the Waitangi Tribunal. The role of literacy and the moving of Maori from an oral culture to a written one was also interesting and the linkage of both to Maori conversion to Christianity.

Technology and our tamariki-are we getting it right?
Julie Cullen
Education Review Oct.8th, 2018
An article that raises interesting points around the use of technology and screen time in schools. Cullen argues that research points to some significant physical and mental problem arise from too much screen time. She uses the term 'virtual autism'. The article state that the introduction of technology into schools has not improved educational outcomes. This is a useful consideration in that some of our parent community have expressed concerns about this issue.

Malcolm Mulholland
Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi
Sept. 2018
An ebook that looks at the New Zealand Wars and how they are remembered. The idea behind it is to promote thinking around the NZ Wars and to encourage a wider knowledge and memory of these events. Some very good resources on all aspects of the various campaigns.

Why 'skills v knowledge' is the wrong discussion.
Nina Hood
Education Central 26/11/18
An opinion piece suggesting that the debate around skills v knowledge is in itself wrong and that both have a place and need to be considered as equal in education.

Te Ao Hou The New World
Binney. J, O'Malley. V, Ward. A
Bridget Williams Books,2018
A stand-alone paperback version of the midsection of Tangata Whenua originally published in 2014. This is an excellent summary of New Zealand in the 19 Century. Broken into five chapters

  1. The Coming of the Pakeha 1820 -1840
  2. Rangatiratanga and Kawanatanga 1840 - 1860
  3. Wars and Survival 1860 - 1872
  4. The Land and the People 1860 - 1890
  5. The Quest for Survival 1890 - 1920
This is an excellent resource for both Yrs 12 & 13 as it covers key aspects from both courses. Missionaries, Musket Wars, Conversion, The Treaty, Increased Pakeha settlement, Kingitanga, etc. Also valuable as it covers events from a Maori perspective.
